Two young people were killed early Monday morning when the car they were riding in slammed into a tree in Lindenhurst.
Two other teens were critically injured in the crash, which happened on North Wellwood Avenue.
Police say 17-year-old David O'Brien was behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang at 5:20 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. The car crashed into a fire hydrant, knocking it out of the ground, before it crashed into the tree.
The front-seat passenger, 16-year-old Joseph Galdorisi, was killed instantly.
A female passenger who was sitting in the backseat was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her identity has not been released.
O'Brien and a third passenger, 16-year-old Daniel Ozarowski, survived the crash. They remain in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Galdorisi was a student at Lindenhurst High School. His mother, who posted a heartbreaking goodbye to her son on Facebook, wrote that she believes drugs were the cause of the accident.
Police say the cause is under investigation.
The Lindenhurst school superintendent says the high school's Crisis Response Team and counselors will be available this week for students and staff.
