Yonkers police say a 14-year-old girl was in serious condition after she was hit by a truck on Saw Mill River Road and Barney Street Avenue around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Police say the girl was exiting a Bee-Line bus and was hit by a truck while crossing the street.
Police say the truck did not stop.
A person who called 911 followed the truck. Yonkers police informed other police departments, leading Elmsford police to conduct a traffic stop a short time later.
Police say the driver of the truck is under arrest for leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
Thursday coverage
The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment and is now in stable condition after suffering several fractures.
Neighbors say they're heartbroken to hear what happened and that that stretch of road can be dangerous.
"This is a pretty busy road," says Anton Cutul, a Yonkers resident. "There's a speed limit but you see people sometimes go 50 mph."
Some parents say this raises major concerns for them.
"It's crazy because my daughter also comes home from the same road. The school bus drops her off so to hear something like that, it's terrible," says Jason Figueroa, a Yonkers resident.
