Thousands of dollars in cash and hundreds of beach passes were stolen from a Long Beach ticket office, police say.
Police say three suspects broke into a trailer Sunday, stealing nearly 700 beach passes worth around $20,000 and more than $14,000 in cash.
"Generally speaking - the money is not left here at all," says Long Beach Police Commissioner Ron Walsh. "They're moved around very quickly, and it's usually a very safe operation."
He says they don't expect crimes like this to continue and are hoping that the public and their investigators will come through to catch the suspects.
The money stolen offsets tax increases, according to police.
Beachgoers hope that the city will step up patrols.
"It isn't fair, and the beaches get crowded and stuff like that," says Laura, of Long Beach. "It's horrible - it really is horrible. They charge so we can keep the beaches nice."
Walsh says they have the ticket numbers for all of the stolen beach passes. If someone comes to the beach with a stolen card, he says they will be subject to arrest and questioning.
