Police say 10 people have been arrested as part of a gang takedown in the Hempstead and Uniondale areas.
Police said the bust was aimed at stopping gangs, illegal gun possession, drug trafficking and other violence in Nassau County.
Nassau police say the arrests were part of an 18-month joint investigation with the district attorney's office, along with the FBI and ATF. The charges range from federal narcotics and firearms possession to gang assault and menacing a police officer.
News 12 Long Island has learned the suspects have ties to the Bloods and Crips gangs. Police say several more arrests are expected in the coming days.
In addition, police are increasing its reward to $10,000 for information on three deadly shootings in Hempstead. As News 12 has reported, Jonathan Wade, Victor Benitez and Geraud Hill were all shot and killed last week.
Chief Steven Skrynecki says they will be testing recovered weapons from Wednesday's arrests to see if they are a match for any of the fatal shootings.
"We'll be doing analytics on the guns and recovered rounds from some of the shootings in the area. If we have a match, we'll be looking at upgraded charges," said Skrynecki.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
