Mourners held a vigil Monday night after a man was killed in a crash on Peninsula Boulevard in Hewlett Sunday.

The man was killed, and three others were hurt when a car slammed into a tree in Hewlett overnight, and police say it appears speed was a factor in the crash.

According to detectives, Carlos Salazar, 20, of Far Rockaway, was heading north on Peninsula Boulevard at Avon Road when his car left the roadway and struck a tree. Salazar was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I have no words right now," says Andrew Castano, Salazar's cousin. "I just can't believe it."

Three passengers in the car, two males and a female, were taken to Winthrop University Hospital. The two male passengers, one identified as an 11-year-old, were seriously injured. The female suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, although witnesses say she was thrown from the car.

Neighbors say it isn't the first time someone has been killed by hitting the same tree. They say speeding is a chronic problem on Peninsula Boulevard despite its 30 mph limit.

A man who lives near the scene of the crash says at least two other people have died after crashes with the same tree.

One resident says he has asked the Town of Hempstead for additional safety measures, such as a guardrail. But Peninsula Boulevard is a county road, and a Nassau spokesperson says the county has not received any complaints.

Nassau's Department of Public Works says it will look at the road to determine what improvements can be made, if any.
