The National Weather Service reports that the violent weather that tore through the Northport area Monday night was not a tornado.
Some residents thought they had witnessed a twister, as winds whipped in the 70 to 80 mph range, leaving a 250-foot-wide path of destruction through Northport and East Northport.
But the Weather Service said radar showed a ?small area of rotation? over Northport Harbor that dissipated just prior to reaching the coast. Damage in the villages of Northport, East Northport and Kings Park were the result of straight-line thunderstorm winds, officials said.
Despite the official storm designation, Matt Caliman, who has lived by the water for several years, says it was like nothing he?s seen before in the area.
No injuries were reported in the area.
In the Farmingdale area, the same storm system ripped shingles off rooftops and smashed trees. The National Weather Service also says that despite the strong wings, no tornado touched down.
