A new plaque was unveiled Monday at Patchogue Village Hall in honor of Marcelo Lucero on what would have been his 50th birthday.
Lucero, an Ecuadorian immigrant, was murdered in a 2008 hate crime.
For years, Lucero's family gathered at his memorial site in Patchogue, but last year, the memorial went missing.
On Monday, a new plaque was unveiled in his honor.
"The plaque represents something important to the community and to my family, for my brother, and to see that, it was heartbreaking," says Joselo Lucero.
Lucero was fatally stabbed by a gang of seven teens while walking home from work. Those involved were all convicted and sentenced to jail time.
