Plane makes emergency landing, passengers evacuated in Newark
Smoke forced a plane to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Saturday morning, where 189 passengers were evacuated by emergency slides.
According to the FAA, Air Transat Flight 942, departing from Montreal, Canada, reported a possible fire in the cargo hold at about 8:30 a.m. It was diverted to Newark.
With crew members, 197 people were on board. Police say two people reported minor injuries which were not related to the smoke and fire reported in the cargo hold or the landing.
At one point Saturday afternoon, more than 150 flights were delayed at Newark.
Air Transat released this statement saying, “Our passengers’ safety is our top priority and they were evacuated from the Boeing 737 promptly after landing.”
The airline tweeted that another aircraft and crew would pick up that Florida-bound flight.
