A plan to build a jail in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx is getting mixed reviews. The Department of Corrections (DOC) is looking to build a jail at an unused portion of the Oak Point Freight Yard. A DOC official says the new jail would be in close proximity to the courts and is appropriately zoned and large enough to accommodate a 2,000-bed facility. Lisa Ortega, who lives near the proposed jail site, said she's against the prison. Ortega says her organization, Rights for People with Psychiatric Disabilities, would rather see prisoners rehabilitated instead of more jails. Members of Community Board 2, which represents the area, say they're also opposed to the plan and are in the process of working on a strategy to stop the jail from opening.
