After years of remaining neutral on the proposed Calverton resort project, the Long Island Pine Barrens Society broke silence and came out against it Tuesday.
Pine Barrens Society says it will block efforts to build the $2 billion resort, which is set to include an indoor ski mountain, manmade lake and thousands of hotel rooms. The organization says it objects to the Town of Riverhead being the lead agency in the environmental review of the proposed resort site. It says the position poses a conflict of interest because the town stands to benefit financially from the resort.
Riverhead Town Supervisor Phil Cardinale emphasizes the review will be a collaborative effort in which multiple groups will have their voices heard. Those agencies include the New York Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Protection, Suffolk County and the Riverhead Town Planning Board.
The two-year process of the environmental review is set to begin in July.
