Suffolk County police say the pilot of a small, single-engine plane was killed Sunday after the plane crashed into the water off Smith Point Beach.
Police say 61-year-old Robert Baranaskas, of Northport, was practicing stunts for an air show when his World War II-era plane crashed around 1:20 p.m. Authorities believe Baranaskas' son watched as the accident took place.
Suffolk County police officers were joined by the county Marine Bureau, the United States Coast Guard and the New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing in their search and rescue efforts throughout the day Sunday. The plane has not been recovered.
The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
