A man pleaded not guilty today in an Eastport hit-and-run that killed a young mother.

Prosecutors say Peter Torrillo was driving on Montauk Highway in Eastport on Nov. 2 when he struck Erika Strebel and her friend Edward Barton while they were trying to put gas in Strebel's disabled SUV. Strebel was killed, and Barton was seriously injured.

According to prosecutors, pieces of a broken headlight and paint chips found at the scene led them to Torrillo.

Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota says crash evidence technicians matched the paint chips to a truck owned by Torrillo, which was in a Queens body shop with front end damage. Spota says Torrillo fled the scene of the crash, hid the car at his home and then went about his evening as normal.

The Strebel family says they know Torrillo and his family well.

Torrillo's attorney says his client is cooperating with authorities, but adds that he is being treated for bipolar disorder and depression.

Torrillo was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and is being held at the Suffolk County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
