Perseids peak this week!
The Perseid meteor shower is an August staple, and is is back in the eastern sky. While the peak will be tonight through Thursday night, it is certainly visible on either side of the apex - up to about 10 days - especially in darker locations.
This is one of the most popular meteor showers of the year, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly because of the season in which they fall. While it may not be as spectacular as it has been some years, astronomers say you could still see up to 40 or 50 meteors per hour during the shower’s peak, even with the moon partially getting in the way. The good news is that the Perseids tend to be bright, and a good percentage of them may still be able to overcome any moonlight.
As far as the weather is concerned, News 12 meteorologists say that Tuesday night should offer the best weather of the shower's peak. There will likely be more clouds around Wednesday and Thursday nights, not to mention some wet and stormy weather.
