A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Saturday at the new Peconic Ice Rink in Riverhead.
Town officials and some Islanders legends came together for the ceremony.
The arena named after former Islanders captain Ed Westfall features an NHL regulation-sized sheet of ice that will host public skating sessions, clinics and youth and adult hockey leagues.
Organizers said the project has been in the making for five years. The Islanders also plan to host clinics at the rink to grow the game out east.
