Pearl River-based Pfizer is now the first company to have its COVID-19 vaccine fully approved by U.S. regulators for ages 16 and up.

The decision comes at a time when cases rise across the country.

More than 200 million Pfizer doses have already been administered in the U.S. since emergency use began in December, with only 60% of the country fully immunized.

Many hope the decision encourages more people to roll up their sleeves.

In a statement Pfizer's CEO said, "I am hopeful this approval will help increase confidence in our vaccine, as vaccination remains the best tool we have to help protect lives and achieve herd immunity."

"The public can be confident that this vaccine meets the FDA's gold standard for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality," says acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock.

Moderna has also applied for full licensing from the FDA. That decision could come next month. Johnson & Johnson has not submitted its application yet, but the company reportedly has plans to do so before the end of the year.
