Large amounts of snow left from the weekend storm are still creating problems in Paterson as cleanup enters another day.

Many vehicles remain stuck behind tall piles of snow, with some cars plowed in as crews work to clear roadways. Backroads across the area remain covered and icy, and the frigid conditions have prevented any significant thawing.

All over Paterson, drivers were seen using chairs and garbage cans to reserve their parking spots after digging out their cars. City ordinance prohibits the practice.

“Listen, I’ve seen people put animals to save their spots, dogs. That’s cruel by the way. But putting a chair, illegal. I’ve notified law enforcement, we’re patrolling the streets and we’re removing these objects as well,” Mayor Andre Sayegh of Paterson said.

However, residents say that the ordinance won’t change their approach.

“I’m really sorry mayor, but we gotta do what we gotta do, you know. It’s a lot of work. It’s rock solid snow… it’s ice, it’s ice,” Devin Crespo of Paterson said.

The issues could continue across the state into the weekend when another potential snowstorm may arrive.
