Patchogue Village Board to vote on rezoning plan that would build hotel

The Patchogue Village Board of Trustees will vote Monday night to rezone a property to build the village's first hotel.

If the board votes in favor of the rezoning, it would be a critical next step toward knocking down a former bowling alley and building a Hilton hotel in its place.

The former bowling alley is located on the corner of Division Street and West Avenue, which is right across the street from the Patchogue train station and in very close proximity to the Fire Island ferry.

“This becomes as much an oceanfront community, allowing people to stay here, take the ferry, go to the ocean,” said Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri.

"From a commerce perspective, I think it's a wonderful idea. Anything to bring more foot traffic,” said Roger Rutherford, owner of Roger’s Dessert Bar.

Some residents, however, say the hotel will increase congestion in the area.

“There’s going to be traffic at the train station. There’s already a lot going on, so I wouldn't see why it wouldn't already add more,” said Nick Alexander.

“The summer, it's crazy. It does get very congested, but I think next to the train station is a unique opportunity...as long it's thought out, it should be great," Kaetlyn Jackson said.

Pontieri says the public will have another opportunity in the near future to provide input on the hotel proposal.

If the project is approved, construction would begin in a few months.
