Parents in the Patchogue-Medford School District said they were outraged that they were notified on Sunday night that bullets were found in the high school on Friday morning.
The district sent out an email notifying them that a foil packet with 19 bullets was found in the vestibule of the high school.
Parents were notified of the incident more than 48 later on Sunday around 5 p.m. They said they were furious over how the school handled the situation.
"How do you not inform parents until 4:45 p.m. on a Sunday where you can't be reached and there's no answers?" said parent Michelle Barke.
The information was immediately reported to Suffolk County Police and an investigation ensued.
Every measure was taken to safeguard the campus while the investigation continued.
As of Sunday night, there was no additional information about the discovery. After receiving the statement, however, it sparked more questions than answers for parents.
"Is there a gun in the building? Do they know? Where are our answers? How do you send this out at 4:45 p.m. on a Sunday? It doesn't make sense! it's very nerve-wreacking," Barke added.
Ethan Meyer also has a student that goes to the high school and was just as upset.
"Why were we not notified of this?" Meyer asked. "Three days later, we're finding out about this via email."
Suffolk County Police said a school staff member who found the bullets reported it to them on Friday at approximately 8:30 a.m.
They added that there did not appear to be a credible threat as of Sunday night.
A mother who did not want to appear on camera said she, like many parents, was trying to decide if she wanted to send her children to school on Monday.
Parents also said after school activities went on as normal on Friday despite what happened.
As of Sunday night, it was not known whether or not any extra safety precautions would be taken when students arrive to school on Monday morning.
