Police say an 87-year-old man was killed when the driver of the car he was riding in apparently lost control of the vehicle.
The crash happened at around 5:15 p.m. Friday in West Hempstead. According to detectives, an 81-year-old female driver was in a 2003 Acura as she exited a CVS parking lot on Eagle Avenue. They say she lost control of the car, causing it to veer on to a curb and travel back into the parking lot, where the vehicle struck two parked cars.
The Acura then continued onto Hempstead Avenue, where it struck a tree and came to rest.
The male passenger, identifed as Henry Gugumuck, of Malverne, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was also hospitalized in serious condition with head and neck injuries.
Police say no criminality is suspected. The vehicle has been impounded for a safety check.
