Parole officers are denying responsibility for clusters of registered sex offenders forming in Suffolk County.
One Coram community is currently home to 56 registered sex offenders, many of them concentrated in a small area called Gordon Heights. Homestead Drive alone houses more than 10. Residents say they fear for their children?s safety and wonder who allows these clusters to form.
Officials say a parole officer must approve the placement of and frequently check up on a paroled sex offender. However, parole officers say they are stretched too thin and have not been able to do their job property since a new administration came in three years ago. A spokesperson for the state Division of Parole adds that a parole officer only determines, along with a supervisor, if a parolee?s residence is viable.
