Concerned parents, day care staff and community leaders gathered in front of the Lucille Murray Child Development Center Friday, urging the city not to close down the Mott Haven day care center that serves about 200 children. The city cited long-running financial mismanagement and poor building conditions as reasons for closing the E. 140th Street center. But the city?s public advocate disputed these claims and has called for a City Council hearing to further investigate. For now, parents are scrambling to find another spot for their kids in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Bronx.
