The armed robbery of a paraplegic in Mastic Beach has left his family calling the area "a neighborhood in sharp decline."
Matthew Deperte has been paralyzed for almost 10 years. Deperte says he watched helplessly in bed Friday morning as a gunman made off with $1,400 of his money.
The victim had no defense against the intruder since his dog was locked up and a shotgun was out of reach. "I thought I was in the midst of a horror movie," he says.
Departe's brother is disgusted by the incident. "It makes me feel sick," says Leonard Deperte. "It turns my stomach."
Police are asking anyone with information on the robbery to alert authorities.
