The Oyster Bay Town Board voted against footing the legal bills for civil litigation brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission against former Town Supervisor John Venditto, who was recently acquitted of federal corruption charges.

There were four no votes, one yes vote, one abstention and one recusal. Current Town Supervisor Joe Saladino was among those who voted no.

Under the current law, if Venditto was working within the scope of his responsibilities at the time, the town would be authorized to defend and indemnify him.

Some Oyster Bay residents said they would not be happy about paying for Venditto's legal fees, while others said he was within his right to ask.

Board members were advised not to comment on their votes after the meeting because News 12 is told that Venditto is expected to file suit.
