Oyster Bay residents say a road scheduled for repair has one big flaw that isn't being fixed. West Shore Road is crumbling and in need of emergency repair, according to Nassau County. However, residents say the road is also unsafe for bicyclists, and they want the county to fix that, too. Residents initially wanted a 12-foot bike path constructed, but Nassau County Leg. Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D-18th District) says the road is too small. Now, she and other concerned neighbors are pushing for a bike lane which would only be about three-and-a-half feet wide. DeRiggi-Whitton says their next step is to meet with the Department of Public Works (DPW) and ask crews to paint a line on the road which would indicate that bikers use the path. But DPW officials say that just isn't feasible. "After careful planning and design, it has been determined that in order to accommodate a designated bike path or bike lane to the reconstruction of the West Shore Road seawall project, the county would face several obstacles, including the need to acquire land from the Federal Wildlife Refuge and private homeowners," a Nassau DPW spokesperson said in a statement.
