The owner of an asbestos removal company in Patchogue has been charged with cheating the workers’ compensation insurance system, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Joseph Arthurs, owner of VGN Enterprise Corporation, stands accused of intentionally misrepresenting information in order to obtain lower insurance rates between 2023 and 2024.

Prosecutors say he lied to the workers’ compensation insurance company about the payroll, number of employees and occupational hazards.

The fraud resulted in the company underpaying insurance premiums by more than $160,000.

Arthurs was arrested on Aug. 25, given a desk appearance ticket and later arraigned on Sept. 9.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 21.
