Nassau officials announced 95 arrests connected to the sale or use of heroin, oxycodone and other opiates Wednesday. Those arrested include the former boyfriend of a Massapequa teen who died of a heroin overdose last year.
The newly created Nassau County Heroin Task Force was behind the investigation, officials say. The task force was formed to combat what officials call a massive rise in heroin use in the county.
?If you sell heroin in Nassau we will find you, arrest you and you will spend many years in prison," Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice told the press Wednesday.
Since the death of 18-year-old Natalie Ciappa, the county has passed a bill called Natalie's Law, which informs school districts about heroin-related crimes. Ciappa?s ex-boyfriend, Phil Ordaya, has been on law enforcement?s radar since the girl?s death after people say they obtained information connecting him to drug deals.
Ordaya was also arrested last July in connection to another heroin investigation. The defendants range in age from 17 years old to 68 years old. Two handguns, heroin, nearly $30,000 and 13 vehicles were also seized.
Police are also working on a Web site to map out where heroin-related arrests are made.
