One person was injured after a massive explosion leveled a home Wednesday in Franklin Square.
At least six fire departments responded to the scene of the Ribbon Street blast, which occurred around 6:45 a.m. The homeowner, Joseph Sicari, 79, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center with second and third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body.
Some neighboring homes were damaged by heat from the flames and flying debris. Sicari told police the explosion occurred after he lit a cigarette in his kitchen. KeySpan says there is no evidence at this time that gas service to the home was involved in the incident. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the blast.
