OH, BUOY! Channel marker washes up on Seaside Heights beach

The buoy, identified as channel marker #13, became dislodged, traveled all the way from the Ambrose Channel between Sandy Hook and Breezy Point New York, and landed in Seaside Heights a week ago, according to the United States Coast Guard.

There's a new attraction in Seaside Heights that has a lot of people talking this week.

A massive navigational buoy broke free and ended up on the Seaside Heights beach.

The word is out on social media as visitors posing with a massive buoy are filling up timelines.

“It’s a novelty right now,” said Mayor Tony Vaz.

The buoy, identified as channel marker #13, became dislodged, traveled all the way from the Ambrose Channel between Sandy Hook and Breezy Point New York, and landed in Seaside Heights a week ago, according to the United States Coast Guard.

Mike Servello and his kids just happen to be in town from Altoona, and besides the usual beach souvenirs, they'll take back a most unusual selfie to Altoona, Pennsylvania.

“I was at the house and they were saying this being over here so we all came over and took a gander at it,” said Servello.

Seaside Heights Mayor Tony Vaz and Ocean County Commissioner Jennifer Bacchione just happened to be hosting a forum on summer tourism.

“The Coast Guard have been notified. They've been down. They were here yesterday and they took the beacon lights off,” said Mayor Vaz. “We're letting people come and observe it. It's a novelty right now and that's OK.”

“I was talking to Mayor Vaz and he said you have to see what popped up on our beach,” said Commissioner Bacchione.

Mayor Vaz says the Coast Guard will use a helicopter to hoist the buoy off the beach. Buoys this size can weigh more than 10,000 pounds.

The Coast Guard says it could still be several weeks before the buoy is removed.
