Michaela Ressegger, a Kellenberg High School senior and basketball captain, says this season didn't end the way she imagined.
During a recent game, she tore her ACL, an injury that sidelined her. But her coaches and teammates weren't ready to let her athletic legacy and her story end there.
Before last week's game, Kellenberg worked out a play with Saint John the Baptist school to give Ressegger a final moment to take her last shot on the court as a senior.
The crowd cheered her on as she took the shot.
As she walked off the court, she was embraced by her coach, Matthew Kirk, and her teammates. One of her teammates, Junior Siobhan Murray, says they all appreciate Saint John the Baptist school for allowing them to have this special moment for Ressegger.
"We always have her back. We'll be with her always by her side. She always has us if she needs us anytime," says Murray.
While her injury kept her from playing, Ressegger found another way to contribute, serving as assistant coach, offering guidance and non-stop support from the sidelines.
Through it all, she discovered something bigger than the game.
"I definitely want to come back here and teach, and coach and I think this injury, it's kinda opening the doors to that sooner rather than later," she says.
Now she's hoping to inspire future generations.
Ressegger will undergo surgery on Tuesday and plans to stay involved with the team during her recovery.
