News 12 Long Island's Kevin Maher caught up with Olympic figure skater and Great Neck native Sarah Hughes recently to mark a decade since her gold medal-winning performance. At the Salt Lake City games, the 16-year-old landed in fourth place during the technical program, but leaped to first on the second and final night. Hughes says she was rarely nervous and refused to get mad at herself.
"I didn't say, 'I want the gold medal,'" said Hughes. "I said, 'We're just going to have a good time.'" A junior in high school at the time, she says her attempts at a normal teenage life were squashed by her newfound fame. She has since graduated from Yale University and is writing a book about the six other American women who have captured figure skating gold at the Olympics.
