Long Island's shores are filled with sailing schools, but tucked away in Oyster Bay serious sailors from around the world descended upon the town this summer to learn from the best at Oakcliff Sailing.

According to Dawn Riley, of Oakcliff, the mission of the center is to reclaim America's place in the sport of sailing.

"The goal is to get more medals in the Olympics," Riley says. "The goal is to train citizens inside the sport and outside the sport."

Riley adds that the center not only teaches sailing skills, but also how to understand when there's a problem and how to fix it.

Those with basic sailing skills can join the center and race on their 76 boats. Sailors can learn everything from how to repair a torn sail or fix a diesel engine to how to budget and then hoist a sail.

Those with experience can become Oakcliff supporters and do some serious racing Tuesday and Wednesday nights. After casual race nights on Thursdays, sailors can enjoy a potluck barbecue.
