Residents were greeted Monday by the biggest snowstorm to hit Long Island since Feb. 12, 2006.
About 9-13 inches of snow fell throughout Long Island, creating treacherous conditions on the roadways for drivers. Although the snowfall calmed down Monday afternoon, road conditions remained dangerous in part because of whipping winds.
The weather prompted Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy to declare a snow emergency early Monday. Despite the declaration, all county buildings remained open on Monday. Levy urged all residents to stay off the road unless it was necessary. He also said the declaration may help the county get federal or state emergency funds down the road. The blizzard-like weather did claim the life of one motorist. Police say 57-year-old Jose Fuentes, of Huntington, was killed when his car skidded into oncoming traffic and hit a van in Greenlawn Monday night.
The cold weather may have also caused the death of an 72-year-old Massapequa woman. Marion Krauss's body was discovered outside her home at around 4 p.m. Authorities say foul play was not involved in her death and are trying to determine how exactly she died.
"She was fully clothed wearing a winter coat, hat," says Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone. "We don?t know whether she slipped or fell or had some sort of previous medical history."
Rollovers and spinouts were reported across Long Island, but no major injuries were sustained.
Most schools were closed as were courts in some towns. Some businesses didn't even open up their doors, but restaurants like Mama Rosa?s pizzeria reported numerous takeout orders.
Temperatures will remain low into Tuesday and wind chills will make it feel like single-digit temperatures.
