Officials: Wyandanch, Deer Park fires appear to be connected

Police say they are searching for an arsonist after more than a half-dozen fires were set overnight in Suffolk County.
Officials say that the fires were intentionally set to a vehicle on Long Island Avenue in Wyandanch at 2:54 a.m.; a store located at 10 Station Road in Wyandanch at 3:19 a.m.; a fence on Grand Boulevard in Wyandanch at 3:53 a.m.; a boat at 500 Lake Ave. in Deer Park at 4:12 a.m.; a flag on West 22nd Street in Deer Park; and a flag on Grand Boulevard in Deer Park at 6:33 a.m.
According to Suffolk police, the male suspect used an aerosol can to ignite the flames as he went on the destructive rampage.
Detectives are also investigating a robbery at a Sunoco gas station, located at 1580 Straight Path in Wyandanch, at 3:22 a.m. They say the man used an aerosol can to light a fire and demanded cash from the clerk.
Worker Sanjeev Kumar says the arsonist made off with about $500.
Suffolk police are asking anyone with information about the fires to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
