Residents gathered at Wantagh High School Tuesday night to discuss potential locations for a new Nassau County police precinct.
The Seventh Precinct in currently located on Merrick Road in Seaford. However, the county recently announced plans to build a new precinct farther west on Merrick Road, near the entrance of Cedar Creek Park. County Executive Ed Mangano backed away from that plan after public opposition to it.
Some residents had said the previous plan would have raised security and quality-of-life issues.
Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter says the Seventh Precinct needs to be rebuilt because it is old, run-down and ill-equipped to handle modern policing.
Officials say that with a budget of $12 million, cost is a big consideration when it comes to the new location. They say they would prefer to build on property already owned by the municipality or county.
Rebuilding on the old site is still on the table, residents were told, along with other sites, although none were specifically mentioned.
There is no clear timetable for choosing a new location for the precinct. Officials say Mangano will select one of several sites under consideration. The final decision ultimately lies with the county Legislature.
