Officials say the amount of toxic wastes dumped at a veterans' housing complex in Islandia is nearly twice as much as originally thought.
Crews have carted away 2,500 tons of hazardous wastes at Veterans Way, according to Newsday.
Officials originally expected to remove only about half that amount.
Veterans Way is one of four sites in the Town of Islip being investigated in an illegal dumping probe.
This week tests will be taken to see if all the waste is now gone.
So far, six people are facing charges in the alleged scandal.
