County executives Tom Suozzi and Steve Levy are challenging the U.S. Census Bureau?s population count for Long Island for fear its numbers will cost the Island millions.
?We just found over the past six months or so, about 8,700 addresses that are not included in the Census Bureau numbers, ? Nassau County Executive Suozzi told News 12 Long Island.
Suozzi and Levy said the bureau short-changed Long Island?s population by about 100,000 people. Suffolk County Executive Levy said had those 100,000 been included in the estimate, it could have resulted in an additional $164 million to Long Island.
Programs like Section 8 housing could face cuts because of the bureau?s estimate. Suozzi and Levy hope their challenge will prevent such cuts.
According to the county executives, Nassau's population is about 1.35 million and Suffolk's is approximately 1.5 million.
