One person was killed in an early morning house fire in Hicksville.
Fire officials say they were the only one inside the home at the time.
Nassau Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said Hicksville Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on Ninth Street in Hicksville around 6 a.m. Thursday. They arrived to find a home fully engulfed in flames.
"There's about 10 fire departments on scene including Hicksville Fire Department, working under their command," said Uttaro. "It's about 70-75 firefighters."
The fire involved the basement and first and second stories of the residence. Conditions inside the home as well as the weather made putting the fire out a challenge.
What caused the fire is unknown. The fire marshal's office will investigate as soon as the home is made safe to walk through.
Officials have not confirmed the identity of the victim.
"It's just about to be Christmas. I feel bad for the family and the whole neighborhood too," said Angel Rios, a neighbor.
No other injuries were reported.
