An off-duty rookie lifeguard jumped into action to save a man in distress off of Long Beach Thursday.
Pictures show the scene of National Boulevard around 6 p.m.
Officials say rookie lifeguard Nickolai Alfasi, 17, was riding his bike home on the boardwalk when he spotted a man struggling in the water and went after him.
The victim was being swept around the jetty by the current.
By coincidence, officials says the Long Beach Fire Department Water Rescue Team was preparing for an exercise nearby and responded quickly.
Rescue crews and other off-duty lifeguards were able to help Alfasi bring the man to safety.
