A Long Island Muslim woman who claimed she was attacked by supporters of President-elect Donald Trump was arrested after New York City police said she made up the story.
According to the NYPD, Yasmin Seweid lives on Paul Avenue in New Hyde Park and is a student at Baruch College in Manhattan. Officers arrested her in New York City around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Seweid, 18, was charged with obstructing government administration and false reporting of an incident for allegedly lying to police.
Last Thursday, the day before Nassau County police said she was reported missing for nearly eight hours, Seweid reported that three drunken men called her a "terrorist" on the No. 6 train in Manhattan. According to the NYPD, she tried to avoid them, but she said they followed her and told her to "take that thing off," referring to her hijab. Seweid told officers the men tried to pull it off, and she got off at the next stop, which is when she called 911.
NYPD officers said that based on their investigation, there was not much evidence supporting her claims. They said she ultimately confessed to making it all up, although no reason has been given as to why.
Abdul Aziz Bhuiyan is a member of the Hillside Islamic Center, which is attended by Seweid's family. He said he spoke with her father on Wednesday, and that the father is distraught and confused by the situation.
By Wednesday night, police said Seweid was in Manhattan awaiting arraignment.
