An NYPD internal affairs detective is accused of cheating on his taxes and lying to a bankruptcy court.
Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice says 46-year-old Leroy Nelson, of the Bronx, took over the title to a friend?s Freeport home in 2001. According to officials, the owner was having financial troubles and transferred the deed to Nelson to hide assets and avoid losing the house. Authorities say Nelson later filed for bankruptcy and told a judge he had no assets, even though he technically owned the house. Rice says Nelson then deducted mortgage interest payments from his 2002 and 2003 tax returns, despite the fact that he was not making payments.
Nelson is charged with three felonies and two misdemeanors. He faces up to 14 years in prison if convicted.
