The ban on trans fats went into effect Tuesday, forcing restaurants and bakeries around the city to toss the artery-clogging ingredient out of their recipes.
Charles LaLima, the owner of Madonia Brothers Bakery on Arthur Avenue, says that so far, his customers have not complained about the change in texture or flavor of sweet treats, but it has been additional work for the bakers.
"They may have to watch the recipe a little closer, but that's it," LaLima says.
Bronx and city dining spots have some wiggle room as they make the transition from to trans fats to healthier natural fats. The New York City Department of Health will not start fining for violations linked to the use of trans fats until October 1.
