For the last five decades, Sesame Street has impacted children worldwide, but on Wednesday, the long-running show left its mark on where it is has been based - New York City.

Crowds packed the corner of West 63rd Street and Broadway to celebrate the intersection that was renamed Sesame Street. The spot sits across the street from Sesame Workshop's headquarters, the nonprofit media and educational force that's been bringing Sesame Street to life since 1969.

"Elmo is so happy everyone came out to celebrate with us!" says Elmo.

Mayor Bill de Blasio joined Elmo, Big Bird and Grover to celebrate the golden anniversary. The 50th anniversary party is continuing all year long.

The navigation app Waze has even run an update that allows users to enter "Sesame Street," and it will take drivers to the intersection.
