The New York State Senate's Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction released a package of 25 legislative recommendations it believes can help tackle the current drug epidemic.

In recent months, the task force held 17 public forums on the issue of addiction.

The recommendations include allowing school districts and other educational entities to have and administer Narcan to someone who is overdosing. It also includes tougher law enforcement and easier access to treatment. State Sen. Phil Boyle has advocated for legislation that would allow outpatient programs to be covered under insurance.

Jeff Reynolds, the executive director of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, is urging lawmakers to act quickly on this package.

Lawmakers have less than a month to act on the recommendations before they recess for the summer session.
