Officials say a pilot was told not to fly just before a deadly crash in Shirley last summer.

A National Transportation Safety Board report obtained by Newsday shows a mechanic advised the plane's owner and pilot David McElroy, of Orient, not to take the plane because it had a faulty tachometer, which shows how fast the engine is going.

A preliminary report shortly after the Aug. 19, 2012 crash said the plane was flying too slow after taking off from Brookhaven Calabro Airport.

McElroy and one of his passengers, Jane Unhjem from upstate, were killed when the plane crashed into a Shirley home.
