Residents in Northport are expressing mixed reactions to a new law that prohibits smoking at all public playgrounds and in village parks during public events.
The American Cancer Society says passing the law was a great move, citing a recent Surgeon General report that says no level of smoke exposure is safe for children or adults. Supporters say the smoking ban has environmental benefits as well, cutting down on cigarette containers and cigarette butts on public property.
In contrast, many Northport residents say the law denies certain rights to smokers. John Bruno is not a smoker, but says the village is becoming more and more restrictive. He says the law is less about health and all about infringing on personal freedom.
