Thousands turned out in Northport Saturday morning for the prestigious 31st Annual Great Cow Harbor 10K Run that benefits Special Olympics Long Island.
?It's a beautiful race, it?s a gorgeous town, people support you,? says Maura Carol, of Islip, who was running the race for the third time.
Some came to enjoy the mild weather and sense of community, while others lined up at the starting line to keep a legacy alive.
Allen Everhart, of Westchester County, arrived in Northport with his 78-year-old father, who has been running in the Great Cow Harbor race since 1976.
Mike, Paul and Thomas Ogazon - a grandfather, father and grandson trio - also crossed the finish line.
After the last runner completed the race, it was time to celebrate. In the course of the festivities, an $18,000 check was presented to the Special Olympics organization.
This year, a record 5,000 participants took part in the run, but the record time of 28 minutes 22 seconds was not broken. Organizers of the event, however, hope it will perhaps change next year.
