North Shore residents are taking precautions ahead of possible storm surges along the Long Island Sound as Henri approaches the East Coast as a Category 1 hurricane.
North Shore restaurants have taken in tables and umbrellas from their outdoor dining areas and placed sandbags to prevent any major flooding.
Shipwreck Tavern in Northport is a mere 100 yards from the water. Owners say Sandy hit them hard and they're hoping this storm doesn't pack as much of a punch.
Boat owners in Northport took time Saturday afternoon to figure out the best way to keep their boats safe during the expected strong winds and rainfall.
The Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program also has to take preventative measures to protect the shellfish they're growing in the Northport harbor.
About 100,000 baby oysters are attached to the docks. They are set to be seeded in the Long Island Sound next month. They help filter the water and improve marine life.
Barry Udelson, of the Marine Program, says they would have to start from scratch if they lose their oysters.
“Wind is a big concern. As the docks get yanked around, we want to make sure they don't get ripped away,” he says. “Trying to make sure everything is tied up nice and secure, and hope for the best.”
