A 15-year-old was fatally shot late Tuesday night in North Bellport, just blocks from his MacDonald Avenue home.
The mother of the victim said her son, Alvin Brothers, was on his way home from the Town Summer Safe Program when he was killed.
"They were approached by a silver, four-door vehicle and words were exchanged between the two groups. Then the vehicle left," Suffolk Police Deputy Inspector Robert Oswald said. Police said the vehicle returned shortly before midnight to the corner of Post and Patchogue avenues, and 10 shots were fired from a 9 mm gun. At least two bullets hit Brothers in the back, police said.
Investigators said there is no clear sign that drugs or gangs were involved in the incident. However, the victim's family said Brothers was recently hanging out with a bad crowd.
"All they have to turn to is streets and gangs," the victim's sister, Lakisha Wilson, said. "That's the only thing they have, so that's what they're gonna do."
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Suffolk Crime Stoppers at (800) 220 TIPS.
