Every summer, tragedy strikes when children are accidentally left in hot cars, but automakers are now coming up with solutions to prevent child deaths.

Nonprofit Kids and Cars says the horrific accident can happen to anyone, and more children are dying because of it. Sue Auriemma, of Kids and Cars, says it is a function of brains being over-taxed, especially parents of newborns.

Some in the medical community refer to these memory lapses as forgotten baby syndrome.

Kids And Cars is pushing for legislation that would require all new cars be equipped with a child safety alert system.

A Rockland County dad is facing charges after his twin daughters were found in his back seat in the Bronx while he was at work.

Now some automakers like Hyundai are trying to prevent these tragedies from happening with new technology. Hyundai spokesperson Donny Nordlicht says they have two features in new SUVs that warn drivers if a child is left behind. One of them senses motion in the back seat.

While technology is a crucial tool, the nonprofit says parents should use a call-in system with their day care, so that a call is made if a child is not dropped off. They also recommend parents put something they'll need on the floor of the back seat so that they'll have to check for it when they get to a destination.
