The debate continues over two proposed battery storage facilities in Suffolk County.

As News 12 has reported, both of the projects being considered are near neighborhoods, one in East Northport and the other near the Greenlawn substation.

Some residents in the Town of Huntington have raised fire safety concerns in response to the plans.

News 12 spoke to a company behind one of the projects at Tuesday’s public hearing held at Huntington Town Hall.

“We are now required under New York's new and updated fire code to create an emergency operations plan with the local fire department first. And then conduct training before a facility will ever go into operation,” said Chris Lindsmayer of Key Capture Energy.

The town board says it is going to meet with fire officials before making a decision and are considering a six-month moratorium to be able to study the risks.

Town Councilman Dave Bennardo tells News 12, "The amount of false alarms that you have with a battery storage facility, the protocols of waiting outside the gates until you can get management to open the doors, that's impossible right now for a volunteer firefighting crew and we're expecting these people to leave their homes at midnight, 2 am.”

“Right now from what we're hearing from them battery storage is not a good idea,” Bennardo said.
